History of Compound Bows

Ever since man began hunting and fighting, the feeling of accomplishment after hitting a target has given him pride and confidence. But these achievements have not stopped at the aiming and hitting of the target. The weapons have been improved and perfected time and again to ensure precision, efficiency and quality.

The Compound Bows is a modern invention and an example of enhanced weaponry and symbol of man's ability to continue advancing with technology. The compound bow was originally invented by an American skilled engineer, Howless Wilber Allen, in the mid 1960s. It wasn't until a number of years later that he further developed the compound bow and received a patent on it for manufacturing in the United States. The United States had implemented laws forbidding the use of devices that were attached to bows and Allen's invention was able to pass the regulations, creating a breakthrough in the history of bows.

The composition of the compound bow relies heavily on the limbs as they contain the energy of the entire bow. The wheels are at the end of each of these energy efficient limbs and the rest of the device is made up of pulleys, cables and bow strings. The strings are attached to the pulleys which have cables attached to the opposite limbs. An archer would draw back the string, which will cause the pulleys to turn and ultimately pull the cables, thus allowing the limbs to bend and store energy.

Generally, beginner archers will use a soft cam while more experienced archers will use harder cams for increased speed.

Archery Bows - How to Choose the Best Bow For You!

In general, archery bows are divided into four classifications: recurve bows, compound bows, longbows and crossbows. The longbows are used for traditional archery. Crossbows are much shorter and are mounted on a rifle-like stock to enable the shooter to cock and shoot its arrow. Cams and pulleys, on the other hand, are the main features of the compound bows. Strength Training For Archers

Did you know that as we age we tend to lose between five and 7 pounds of muscle during each 10 years of our adult life? This even happens when we are in our 20s! Many times when we are not shooting well we believe it to be either our technique or our bow hunting equipment. Rarely do we understand that our draw weight is becoming, gradually, too much for us to handle. Despite training for hours, our performance begins to suffer. Traditional Archery As an Elemental Sport

Many sports are very equipment intensive and demand a heavy outlay of cash. Archery on the other hand can be viewed as a minimalist sport. In mentally calculating his trajectory, he must take into account factors such as distance, wind speed and direction, weather conditions, and the responsiveness of his bow, among others. Only countless hours of practice will make this an intuitive process.

Unlike bow hunting, traditional archery limits the kind of bows which can be employed. Basically, a recurve bow, a selfbow, or a longbow may be used, not a crossbow or compound bow. The distance is regulated as well, not normally exceeding two hundred yards. This puts everybody on the same playing field and accuracy is the key.

One of the great things about traditional archery is that it's easy to get involved in. There are clubs dedicated to archery which you can join that provide equipment. Practice arrows are very inexpensive and last a long time. It is a low budget sport.

The only problem with the sport is that unlike baseball or basketball, there is not a facility in every community. You can join a club as mentioned above and they will have a facility. Or the local high school may have an area which they use for archery during physical education classes. They sometimes will allow citizens to use the facilities. Or get creative; find an empty lot!
